Selena will tell us her personal story, intertwined with poems that she has written about all these experiences. She was an eight year old attending elementary school when the Germans invaded Poland, and only 13 when her name and that of her parents were added to Oskar. Schindler's list of 1100 Jewish laborers whose lives he saved. As those of you who joined us on Sunday, uh, heard Selena at Valley High School say Oskar and Emilie Schindler gave her a second chance at life, and Steven Spielberg gave her a voice. It's an honor to be able to hear her voice and use that voice to teach us lessons of history. Let me divert for just one moment to tell you a personal story. As Marv and I picked Selena up at the airport on Saturday evening. The pilots and crew were beginning to leave. They came over when they saw Selena. They took pictures with her. They thanked her for being on their airplane and they couldn't get enough of her story. They had one of the crew had heard her on the plane because he asked. She asked him to help her put up her heavy suitcase because it was full of books that she was using for a presentation, and she went on to explain who she was. They they were enamored. I feel like I've come home to see so many friendly faces and so many people who remembered my parents. Thank you. Thank you so much. This is a community that welcomed our family, made us, made my parents very happy, gave them a good life for 50 years and helped me to move on forward. So my big thanks to you. I have spoken at Valley High and also at Valley High. Again to the students about my experiences. So today is a little different because I'm going to focus on being sent to in January of 2015, Back to Auschwitz by the Shoah Foundation to the commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz. Some 70 years before, I was one of 100 people, former prisoners, and it was going to be the last commemoration because ten years prior to that, they had 1500 survivors, and this time only 100 survivors, and they figured they could not possibly do it at the 80th anniversary because there won't be any body left. So there was a very interesting experience for me to be in Auschwitz again after all these many years and after all these many experiences that I have had. The interesting thing was people keep asking me what was my feeling like when I was there. Well, it was a very interesting experience, aside from knowing that I was back in Auschwitz. I felt like it was almost like an out of body experience. I was there, but I was there as an 83 year old woman, looking back at the 13 year old girl who was going through all the problems there. And something got triggered in me because I then remembered what it was like to be there, to experience that. And when I came back to the United States and back to California, I've been a member of the Osher Program. I don't know how many of you know that that's called Olli Ollie. Lifelong Learning Institute by Oscar Bernard by Bernard Osher, which is placed at various universities. It's a program for people who are 50 and over and who wish to continue their education in various phases, but do not have to take tests or write papers. Ideal isn't it? So, um, I had signed up for a course that was named tapestry. I thought it was a course on the history of tapestries. When I ended up in the class, there were only 12 of us, and it turned out to be a course on tapestry of Poetry. I had never in my life written anything, nor have I much spoken about these things. So, uh, this. But I felt I couldn't leave because there were only 12 people would not have been right for the teacher. The teacher happened to have been the, uh, poet laureate of Ventura County. That's the county I live in. So I decided to stay. And the way she taught was interesting because she pulled out some of these memories out of me. So the program today is called When Memories Unfold. But I have to preface that a little bit, because I'm going to tell you about what happened just before I read the poem. Okay. So what happened was that by 1940, by 1944, we were in a concentration camp in Russia, which is outside of Krakow. The camp was built on the Jewish cemetery. So when you walked around camp, you were walking on people's gravestones. It was not. And people were able to read their families names as they stepped on them. Not very pleasant experience. But by 1940, and if any of you had seen Schindler's List, then you know what the camp looked like, because that's the camp. It was filmed there, and that's the camp that is featured. By 1944, the camp was going to be dissolved because the Russians were pushing the Germans back. And it felt that, uh, they were going to come very quickly into the camp. And this is now September of 1944. Oskar Schindler, who had a factory there and Enamel works factory, and he was making mess kits for the German army. Bribed so the commandant. He always bribed the commandant for all kinds of things. But this time he bribed the commandant and said he had an epiphany. By the way, he decided at that point that he was going to save his 1100 workers, so he bribed the commandant and asked for 1100 workers to be put on a list to travel to Czechoslovakia, to another factory that he was opening, and this time was going to be a munitions factory. He was very good friends with another guy. This guy was a Viennese entrepreneur. He ran a factory known as Madritsch. He's also recognized at Yad Vashem by the Holocaust survival museum for having for helping a lot of people. My parents worked for Madrid, so did I. I worked on a sewing machine. He asked me to join him to go and they were very good friends, Oscar Schindler and Madritsch, and he asked Madritsch to join him to go to Czechoslovakia to open up another sewing factory. And Madritsch had a sewing factory doing uniforms for the for the German uh Army. Madritsch at that point said, I've had enough, and he went back to Vienna. So Oscar Schindler said to him, okay, you don't want to do it. Please put some people to work for you on my list. Which, uh, madritsch decided was a great idea. And he put between 60 to 100 of his workers on the list. And that's how the list became Schindler's List. Now on that list were 800 men and 300 women, to which it was almost end of September, beginning of October. One day, the 800 men were put in boxcars and sent off. And we, of course, the women left behind had no idea where these people were or whether they got to the right place or anything like that. Two weeks later, 300 women were put into boxcars and sent off. We traveled a day and a half. It happened to have been a late at night, middle of the night. Since Czechoslovakia isn't so far away we figured we were back at Schindler's factory. All of a sudden, the doors opened up and we ended up. We discovered that we were in Auschwitz. And so my first poem has to do with that place. Got too many papers. Sorry. This was written by me in March of 2015. Remembering, as I said, when memories unfold. Poetry. After participation at the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27th, 15. Night. So dark, so cold. The wagon sways. The rhythmic pounding of the wheels repeating. Sends a message to my frightened heart. Do not stop beating. The sudden lurch screech upon steel on steel. The door slides open. Rouse, Rouse. Angry voices shouting. A multitude of dogs barking. Plumes of fire illuminate the night sky. The smoke drifts over the gathered people. The smell, the awful smell. It is the smell of fear. We have arrived in hell. Auschwitz. Well, there we were, not knowing. Not knowing what was going to happen to us. It certainly was a mistake. We weren't supposed to be in Auschwitz. We ended up in Auschwitz for about five and a half to six weeks while we were there. The first thing that they did after we got off the train was to put us into a bunker. Told us to strip, leave our clothes behind. Then they when we were completely naked, the barber, the women barber started shaving our heads and cutting. If you were, if they didn't like you, they shaved your whole head. If they were kind of kind to you. They only cut bits and pieces of it. Then we were walked into a shower room at the top of it. It said Had sauna, which is the German word for bathhouse. We were locked in to the shower room. And of course, we've heard at this point a lot about Auschwitz. We knew that it was an extermination camp. And, uh, there was a moment of panic. We really didn't. We looked up at the showerheads, and we didn't know whether we were going to experience gas or whether we were going to experience water. When the water finally came, it was an incredible feeling of relief and joy because we felt that we had just gained another day of life. They walked us out of that barrack or out of the shower head shower room, into another barrack where we were given striped pajamas. You know what I'm talking about, right? And wooden clogs. And that was our clothing. We never saw the clothing that we had on before. That was behind us. This was our new life. We were taken to our barracks. There were 300 of us. They put 100 people in each barrack. There were five of us sleeping on one of those berths. So we slept. Somebody's feet in my face and my feet in somebody else's face. Five across. So if one person wanted to move, everybody else had to move, you know? But we were still alive. We saw stayed that way for about five and a half to almost six weeks. What we did during that time, and it was getting very cold. Now we are talking about end of October and there's snow on the ground. We had to shovel snow. We had to clean the barracks. We had to clean the latrines. And worst of all, we were counted all the time. Two hours in the morning, standing in cold, two hours at lunchtime, standing out in the cold and two hours in the evening again standing out in the cold. What happened? Every so often they would take a group of women to, uh. I think I told you that we had to clean the barracks and clean the latrines, etc., and shovel the snow. That was our function. Every so often they would take a group of 30 women to the kitchen to peel potatoes. On one of those days, my mother volunteered to go with the 30 women, hoping that she could bring back some of the potato peels so we could have a little extra food because we were really hungry at that point. It just so happened that on that particular day when my mother was with a group of 30 women, we were called out of the barracks and taken to another barrack. And it turned out to be a selection. We were told to strip naked. And there was Doctor Mengele. And this is my next poem. Selection. There he stands, resplendent in his uniform. Shiny black boots. Insignia on his chest. Swastika armband on his sleeve and in his hand a pencil. Unusual, this pencil, but with one flick to either left or right, it has the power to give you life or death. in front of him. A line of naked women, all shapes and sizes. This is my second time confronting the pencil. The first time was not lucky, but the pencil beckons the group back in the line. My body is skinny, undeveloped but clean. Don't know how or why the will to live forces me to utter three words in me. This time the pencil slowly leans towards life. I grab my pile of clothes, hugging them, run out into the snowy outdoors. My pent up emotions burst forth hysterically crying start to put on my clothes. I am only 13 and have gotten a reprieve from death from Doctor Mengele, the butcher of Auschwitz. My mother came back from peeling the potatoes. And of course, she was hysterically crying, too, when she discovered what had happened. And as I got older, I kept trying to figure out truly when I matured, what would have happened if my mother were there? Would I have depended upon her to save me? What? You know, it was just sort of an enigma all this time. And I wondered. But what it taught me was that you can never predict how you're going to act in any particular circumstance or, uh. Time. Also, it has taught me to never figure out you cannot walk in other people's shoes, and you have to become less judgmental as to how people act at a certain point, because you never know what made what precipitated that action and what made them do. We really never can walk in other people's shoes. Well, now we are in Auschwitz and one day we are taking out the group and told to walk into that barrack. We were going to be tattooed. So we all feel at this point, okay, now we're going to become Auschwitz. Uh, you know, prisoners. Because if you get tattooed, you stay there. But as we were walking into the into the bunker to be tattooed and my number was 318, My number was a 74 318. My mother's number was a 74 319. It was done alphabetically. They veered the column of women into another area and told to walk into the bunker, into the boxcars. And there stands Schindler, Oskar Schindler, who had come in, which we later found out with a whole valise full of money to bribe the commandant to let his women go. If he hadn't come, we would have been tattooed, and we would have had to stay. I think the commandant was waiting for him to come with the bribe. So now we are in the boxcars. And about two days we arrived at the factory in Moravia. The doors open. It is cold. The doors open and we step down from the boxcars. And there is a barbed wire. And behind the barbed wire we see the men. And that's the first that we ever knew that the men actually made it to the place. And when they look at us, they don't recognize us because we look so different with our shaved hats, heads and with everything, new clothes and everything. But we are we feel we're in a safe place because we trust Oskar Schindler to be good to us, and he is good to us. Mrs. Schindler then starts foraging all over the place to find rutabagas and other winter vegetables, to put them into the meager soup that we had at lunch time in the morning. By the way, I do want you all to go into the museum to see the cup. The Schindler Cup, because that's the red cup that both my mother and I used in the camp. And it is there on display. It's the Schindler Cup was made in his factory. So, uh, she forages and she feeds us at one, and we all work on making parts for the V-2. But Mr. Schindler tells all of us we are to sabotage every piece of the machinery in every piece that we are working on. And the only reason we can, the only way we can sabotage it by 1mm or 2mm. We're working, by the way, for parts for the v-2s, the rockets that were shelling London. The only way we can really sabotaged that stuff is to change the calibrators to show that the calibrator is reading the correct measurement rather than a false measurement. So the calibrators were done in such a way that they showed the correct measurement. And that was important because we were supervised on the calibrators by German soldiers standing behind us. Now comes the time. You know we are there and we are hungry because rations are very limited. But, uh, we feel very safe under his protection because he has made a decision now that he's going to save us no matter what, even if he has to bribe other commandants because we are still in a concentration camp. Camp? This is a camp with the factory within it. We all have our barracks on top of the factory, and we are supervised by soldiers with guns all around us. And there is a German commandant in charge of these soldiers. And to whom Oskar Schindler is really responsible, comes the wonderful end of war. On May 7th and eighth in different parts of Europe. But we are not liberated till May 9th. And the reason for that is that there was a Yalta agreement that Americans were going to liberate Germany, but Russians were going to liberate, uh, the check, the check Czechoslovakian republic. So we had to wait for the Russian army to come to liberate us. In the meantime, though, we have to say goodbye to Oskar Schindler, who had saved us, and we are about to save him, because if he had stayed there in camp when the Russians came, he would have. He and his wife would have been killed because he was a Nazi. And, you know, they didn't know the good things that he did. So, uh, we dress him in striped pajamas, put him in their own car, and one, two of the young people in camp drive him into the American zone. We say goodbye to him, but before he leaves, he's such a good person. The the factory that he took over was a factory filled with cloth. He announces to the young people, the young man who was sort of guarding us, to give each family two bolts of cloth and five pairs of scissors so that we could barter these things because we had no money, so we could barter these things for lodgings and food, etc.. On our way back to our homeland, which would have been Poland. And I want you to see that there is a pair of scissors here. To show you that last pair of scissors. Okay. Uh, we bought it for pairs, and one pair is with us. Well, now comes the Russian army to liberate us. It's a bedraggled army, a Russian on horse and lots of little people behind them in all kinds of torn uniforms, etc.. And that brings me back to my next Poem Liberation. We are survivors. To exit barbed wire gates. Two days. We are waiting. Not safe on the outside. With black shirts still marauding. A soldier on a horse. Appears in the distance. Behind him a small, bedraggled group of soldiers. They have come to liberate us. We are survivors. The barbed wires. Gate open. We are free. Hesitant to venture beyond. How can one walk alone? Not in a row of five. Never overseen by guards. Armed. Ready to shoot. We are survivors. How? After five years, following orders. Can we think and act on our own? Will we be able to restore our humanity, or will we always be held suspect in society? Will there be rejoining with the rest of the family, or will we encounter their loss forever gone into eternity? We are survivors. Freedom is ours. Comes with problems. Can we retrieve former lives? Can we go back to homes we've lost? Having experienced horrific events, starving. Fearful. We start our journey 11 days walking, hitching, emaciated scarecrows reached Krakow. There is no welcome. We are not wanted. Four months later, we're back on the road, leaving Europe, seeking new existence in more welcoming countries. We are survivors. We shall succeed. We got to Poland. And as I say, there were a couple reasons that we, you know, right away we had to notify the Red cross to make sure that people on the outside, like my Uncle David, who lived in Des Moines, would be notified that we had survived. And also notify the survivors organization to find if any of our family had survived the Holocaust. So that gives. And there was the other priority was my education. I had only had two years of education, second grade. Schools were closed as soon as the Germans came. and all I could read, but all the other things I didn't have. My head was empty. So then the other priority since it was this was the summer. The other priority was to fill in the gaps in my education so that I could go to a class, to a class in September, get into either high school or middle school. So they hired a tutor, and that's where we used some of the border stuff to pay for. And I started trying to learn and fill in all the gaps that were missing. I did manage to, uh, pass the exams because there was nothing in their head. It was very easy to keep everything that was coming. And I was craving, craving the education. Because if something is denied to you, you will really want it. And since that had been denied to me, I really wanted it. Besides, I was embarrassed. Here I was, 14 years old and I knew nothing. I make it into the. I make it into the gymnasium, which is named for the high school in Poland. And I'm there for one month. Very happy to have made it. And see young people around me and the teachers. But unfortunately, by the end of September, there's another pogrom. And I don't have to explain to you people what a pogrom is in the eastern part of Poland. And my parents decide that with this virulent anti-Semitism on the rise again, they weren't going to stay in Poland. So we leave. We decide to leave. And we leave. The borders were closed, So we leave at night in a Russian truck back to Czechoslovakia, where we stay for about two weeks, traversing the place and then going, uh, overnight into the American zone over the border again. And. We stay in a small, uh, displaced persons camp for about two weeks. My mother decides she's had enough of camps. That's it. So we take an option of living in a small German town on ration cards and packages from, uh, United Nations relief organization. And that was a very good move on my parents, you know that decision, the relief organization packages were wonderful For because inside them was chocolate soap. Coffee. Well, not that we used them, but we used them to barter. That's what paid for my lessons. I started taking lessons because now I'm back in Germany and I can't go to school again. I don't know German. I don't know the German history. I don't know enough of anything here. I just had my Polish stuff backed up to a certain level. But now I'm beyond everything again. But my parents, we live in this town. For about two years. My parents decided it was the best thing that could have happened to me because, uh, living almost a normal life for two years was very wholesome and very welcoming, and also proved to me that not all Germans were ogres. One of the teachers that they engaged, and I made a poem to her. She's a nun in a semi cloister in town. Semi cloistered means that the nuns don't leave the cloister, but the children go in for their education. She. So this is. Her name is mater. I now hear you pronounce mater. Probably, but in Europe it's pronounced mutter. Mutter, Leontyne. In a small town in southern Bavaria, in a semi cloistered convent home of the English sisters, a 90 year old retired nun entered the convent at age 16. Never left in all these years. She's German and Catholic. She will teach a 14 year old girl traumatized by years of ghettos and camps, German and English. She does not know she's supposed to hate her. Hitler's ideas and propaganda are not part of her knowledge her outlook on life, gentle manner and total acceptance. Slowly work the magic of transformation, the realization not all Germans are ogres. Hatred is corrosive. Have to work through anger and hate to move forward in life. We bond for two years, leaving for America. Our letters crisscrossed the oceans for the next two years. Matter. Leontyne loves to hear about America. She's so very happy to hear about my new life. The letter arrives from Mother Superior at 94. Mother Leontyne is no longer with us. That is absurd. That cannot be. For I have all her letters still. For she will always be a part of me in my heart and memories. Because she was my salvation. Well, we stayed there for two years. Uncle Dave's affidavits. David's finally came through and we were told to go to Munich to pick them up from the American consulate. So my my parents and myself, I'm almost 15 and 11 months at that point, go to Munich to pick up the affidavits and our permits to go to the United States. Who should we meet on the street just by chance. But Oskar Schindler, who was in Munich at that time, who knew my parents very, very well because he worked with some of them. And he is so thrilled that we are going to the United States and that he saved a family to produce future generations, that it's just one it's a wonderful meeting, really. So we pick up our affidavits, we pick up our. Papers, our permission, etc. and, um, we about to leave for the ship. But I have another little poem here that I thought about. It was the first winter of 1945, when I was still living in Germany, and I call it Silent Night. 1945. And I say every time I hear Silent Night, it brings me back to a snowy night in Mindelheim, Germany. First winter after the war, the night sky is illuminated by myriad of blinking stars rather than by fire and smoke. The church bells are ringing out. Stille Nacht. No bombs falling. No frightening noise of shooting or soldier's boots marching. No commandant's shouting into groups of five. Routing. It is Christmas and I am free. I feel the peace and tranquility and hope for goodwill to all mankind to take hold. Now are we are in boxcars again, guys? Because that was the only transportation two years after the war in Germany. And we are going towards Bremen Hafen. Where are we going to go? On a ship that will bring us to the United States? And this is the little poem that I wrote of that it's called the United States SS Sea Marlin. That was the name of the ship, the Foghorns sound. The engines begin to chug. Today is my birthday. I am 16 years old. The SSC Marlin is a vessel of hope for my new life. I turn and look east. See the continent slowly disappearing. It is a place I know and understand. It is a place that does not want me. Maybe the West will be more welcoming. The S.S.C. Marlin is a troop ship. It ferried soldiers to fight Nazism. Now it ferries Europe's, discards immigrants with guarded hope. Will this new place give them identity? Will it accept their humanity? Only the future will tell. For now, they are happy. They have escaped Europe's hell. While we arrive in. We took 11 days for this ship to traverse the Atlantic. It was a rough voyage. The troop ship. It was a troop ship which was divided into two cabins, and one cabin was for 60 men and one cabin was for 60 women. And these were hammocks, five in number. And you had to slide into the hammocks like the soldiers did, you know, when they were being ferried to Europe? Everybody got seasick except me. I ate everybody's ice cream. It was great. We arrived in in New York, and my Uncle Dave is there with my Aunt Augusta with a car. And he's going to drive us back to Des Moines, which we proceed to go after a couple of days in New York. I, of course, am aghast at how large the distance is between New York and Iowa. Never conceived of it being so far away. But I get a good education as to what all of these different places are. We end up in Des Moines, and, uh, as soon as we get to Des Moines, my, uh, uncle introduces me to North High School. I bring all my books and my notebooks and everything so that they could figure out where do I belong. And, uh, North High School looks at all of the I've been working looks at all of these things and says, okay, she's ready to go to 12th grade. So we I went from second to 12th. Very unusual, isn't it? But they say I must have a the course on American history and the course on American literature. So that summer we got to Des Moines in middle of June. It was very hot and humid. So that summer I go to East High School and do the course on American history and then American literature. And then in September, I finally enter my most wonderful year that I've ever experienced my first year with other children, other teachers fully accepted, wonderful feeling to be amongst young people my own age and doing the things that young people are supposed to do. So that was my coming to Des Moines, a wonderful community that welcomed us, provided us with good life here. My last poem is something that I have to read to you. It's called tree. In Jerusalem and Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum in the street of the Righteous Gentiles, in a designated third spot. From the start, a man plants a tree. Womanizer, cheater, black market profiteer, risk taker, gambler takes on the biggest gamble of his life. He puts 1100 names on a list, lies, bribes, authorities, wrenches a group of human beings from the jaws of evil. This group, under his protection, will survive the wall. Magnificent. This tree dedicated to Oskar Schindler as it grows and spreads its limbs. Roots and branches proliferate. So do the descendants. The saved groups. New generations. I bear witness. Evil can be harnessed. People of goodwill can make a difference. Forever I shall be in debt. And grateful to Oskar Schindler for giving me a life. And I want to thank this community for giving my parents dignity, restoring their humanity, giving them 50 wonderful years of life here, and for giving me the things that I needed to really move forward. Thank you very, very much. You are welcome to come and look at our stuff. Wait a minute. Let's go. Do look.
