And he was a doctor, and he welcomed me into his home. And his wife was just lovely to me, and they sent me to secretarial school. And then after nine months, she decided that I shouldn't stay there. I should go join the service. So I joined the WAC, the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, and they sent me to the first training center in camp, uh. Fort Des Moines? Yes. And it was lovely. I you they taught us so many things. And we had all the time movies of and exercises and, uh, we had parades and, uh, then we had a we chose which they chose me which to do. And I was a military policewoman for three years, and, uh, they never wanted me to be shipped out. They wanted me to stay here in Des Moines. I used to go to the USO in the afternoon downtown in Des Moines, and I met Rizzo Aaronson, and she came over to me one day, and I was writing a letter, and she said, Thelma, would you like to meet a Jewish boy? He's a civilian. I said, sure, providing I meet him up here. I didn't want to be embarrassed. What if he wasn't good looking? So he he had another friend with him, and I was so glad to see him. He approached me right away, and we hit it off just great. Uh, but I went with him for 18 months, and my mother wanted to see who I was going with. So she came to Des Moines and my mother in law, she made a beautiful luncheon with all her lady friends and embarrassing moments. My mother stood up and said, is this Thelma's engagement party.
